Ahoy Mates,
Update on April's activity at LPYC:
Wednesday evening fun racing is off to a good start. We had 6 boats participate on our first Wednesday. The race was within sight of the Marina in Saline Bay. In fact, the Knotta Yachta offers a great view of the hour long race for those who are interested in viewing. The race offered a great opportunity to gain experience in starting and competing within close quarters of other boats, all in a relaxed environment. The second Wednesday we had to call it off due to weather alerts. The third Wednesday we had 4 skippers show up under heavy wind conditions. This lead the skippers to join up on two boats and sail as a group. The winds quickly subsided and we all enjoyed a late night cruise. The evening ended about 10 pm. It was a beautiful evening sail. This next Wednesday night (April 12th) offers a temperature of 61 degrees, cloudy skies, and SE Winds at 5 to 10 knots. Should be a perfect evening with our short course for practicing and improving our sailing skills.
The Spring Fling Regatta (April 29 & 30th) is off to a great start. The registration forms have been prepared and emailed out. Those of you who need another copy can obtain a copy off our web site, complements of Lynn Easley. Dana and Sherry are putting together the food for the event. Everything from coffee and donuts each morning, box lunches on Saturday, and a spectacular dinner at the Marina on Saturday night. Bob Pryor, has taken over the responsibility of Race Captain for the regatta. His responsibilities include course lay-out, skippers meeting, starting and finishing the race, along with too many other responsibilities to mention. In addition, Harley Wilke, John Fabac, and Dana/Sherry Adams have offered their power boats to assist with buoy placement, photography shots, transportation assistance for smaller board boats without motors, touring interested sightseeing folks, and a race Committee boat for Bob Pryor. John Springer will assist with launching out of town boats, master chief on Saturday night, and calculating race results for the regatta. Chuck Brazell has offered to do clean up detail and running errands along with me and hopefully others. The regatta and all the activities including meals will be free to all LPYC members and their quests. The only registration fee is for the participating racing sailboats. If you are not planning on registering for the race please let Dana and Sherry know you and the number of guest that are coming to the event so they can get a head count. As you can tell your board is committed to putting on a great Regatta filled with fun by all. Those of you who have time to help out with the regatta, please let a Dana, John, Lynn, Bob, Chuck, or myself know. By the way we have a need for a couple photographers with a zoom lens as well as folks who would like to crew.
We have two new members this month. Ron/Darline McKay (Hunter 23.5) and Mike Straus (Venture 222). Hope to see them on coming Wednesdays or at the upcoming regatta. Please take time to welcome them.
Dana and Sherry are putting together our monthly dinner for May and June. In June the dinner will include a 45 minute video on sailing skills, complements of CD Sharp who is a knowledgeable sailing instructor. We are very fortunate to have such talent as CD within our membership. Dana/Sherry will be following up with details.
Stay tuned for my next update!
Happy Sailing,
Commodore Ben
